Manufacture of Coal Gas.The Manufacture of Coal Gas is conducted in the following manner. The Retort, which is usually a D shaped cast-iron vessel, is brought to a bright red heat...The Gas passes through these, and parts with the sulphuretted hydrogen and carbonic acid, which render it impure and unwholesome for use; it is then fit for distribution, and is conveyed to the Gas Holder, where it remains until it is allowed to pass to the consumers' burners.
