London-born painter Monamy (he was born in the Minories and baptized at St Botolphs Aldgate) 'emerges with Samuel Scott as one of the two leading figures in the first generation of British marine painters [...] he worked industriously for at least forty years and has left us a rich heritage of paintings illustrating the nation's naval history in the first half of the 18th century' (E.H.H. Archibald, 'Dictionary of Sea Painters').
