Idiosyncratic portrait of a bearded man with a crescent-topped hat. Georg Friedrich Schmidt (1712 - 1775), German engraver who trained in Paris 1736-46, and returned to Berlin as principal engraver to King of Prussia. Michel Hirsch was a Berlin-based author, two portraits of whom by Schmidt are in the BM.
