During the closing years of the eighteenth century a Roman pavement was discovered, bearing in its mosiac indications of Christian designs and forms; near Frampton, Dorsetshire. Samuel Lysons FRS (1763-1819) was a notable English engraver and antiquary. He was also one of the first archaeologists to investigate Roman sites in Britain, where he specialised in the study of mosaics.
