Die Schachspieler. Les jouers d'echecs. The Chess-Players.A Drawing by Moritz Retzsch, explained, according to hints from himself, by C. Borr. von Miltitz.
Verlag des Herausgebers. Druck der Teubner'schen Officin in Dresden. [German, n.d., c.1840.]
Outline etching, Satan playing chess with Man for his Soul; together with three letterpress explanation leaves in German, English and French (as called for), in original printed paper wrappers. Oblong folio, 260 x 340mm, 10¼ x 13½". Very rare in this the original presentation. Wrappers soiled and tatty; trace of vertical crease.
The fantastic allegorical composition shows a winged angel watching the game with sorrowful expression; the gaming board rests upon an elaborately carved table placed underneath a gothic arch carved with animal, lion and skull motifs. Designed and engraved by Moritz Retzsch (German, 1779 - 1857).
