Portrait of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel [1769 - 1849], civil engineer, engraved from the portrait by Drummond (London, National Portrait Gallery). Brunel is surrounded by objects alluding to his profession and achievements, including a miner's lamp, cotton-winding machine and a model of a lighthouse. On the right is the Thames Tunnel; although the portrait was painted before the completion of the tunnel, Brunel was already famous for his involvement with the project.
