'Perhaps a caricature of Hans Stanley of Paulton's near Romsey, M.P. for Southampton, the grandson of Sir Hans Sloane, who was awkward and eccentric. He never married and shot himself in 1780 [..] His companion is perhaps the Earl of Cork (Edmund Boyle, 8th earl, 1742-98' (F.G. Stephens and M.D. George). By William Austin (1721-1820). "Hans Turbot" is in ink as in the BM copy.
