Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) was a French painter and sculptor, and it was in 1856 when first visited Egypt, which heralded the start of many orientalist and nude paintings depticting Arab religion, genre scenes and North African landscapes. This scene is of the slave market, with a nude woman being inspected before any purchase is made.
