Oval portrait of Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37-68), after Titian. Step-son then adopted son of Claudius, portrayed by sources as a tyrant who 'fiddled while Rome burned'. However these sources are dubious, perhaps written to curry favour with those seeking to justify their hand in his assassination. The 'Encyclopedia Londonensis' was published from 1796 to 1829, compiled by John Wilkes, edited by John Jones.
