The Topers Mistake.
Hand coloured etching, sheet 280 x 225mm. 11 x 8¾". Trimmed to plate; closed tear lower left.
Social satire: inside a church a parson preaches a sermon from his pulpit, his open Bible inscribed 'Hebrews Chapter 10 Verse 12'. He reads "He-Brews-ten-and twelve", prompting a man who likes a drink in the first pew, his face ruddy and warty, to respond wistfully "And no bad stuff either let me tell you, - I should like to take a Mug". Members of the congregation in the rows behind are asleep. After George Moutard Woodward (c.1760 - 1809), etched by Thomas Rowlandson (1757 - 1827).
BM Satires: undescribed. Grego: ii, p.33. Ex Collection Norman Blackburn.
