An Abridgment of Heraldry, or a very plain and easy way for the ready understanding of that ArtAnd for Compleating the Same, here is Added Forty Crests, being of great us for such as Study the Art.
Engraved broadsheet, extremely scarce. 580 x 485mm, 22¾ x 19". One small tear, nicks to edges, a little staining.
A fascinating broadside. Printed explanation of the terminology and designs of heraldic armourials with engraved examples. Of equal interest is the first set of armorials top left, which display the different hatchuring used by engravers to colour-code: with this key a colourist could accurately paint an armorial with no further instruction. Christopher Browne (fl. 1688 - 1712) is best remembered for publishing one of the late editions of John Speed's county atlas, c. 1690-5.
