The United States Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced the separation of the thirteen American colonies away from Great Britain, creating independent states. A copy of the Declaration that was signed by Congress is known as the engrossed or parchment copy, and was given the title of "the unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America".
