The Talle-Ho' Parson Standing at Bay.
Etching on watermarked laid paper, 240 x 350mm. 9½ x 13¾". Lower left corner made up on edge.
A clergyman in bands and gown, his hat on the pavement, squares up to a watchman holding a lantern and stick, his fists raised. He has evidently knocked out one watchman already, who lies on the ground, wig dislodged and still touching his lantern, while a third approaches from the left. Published by Matthew Darly (c.1720 - 1781 or later), possibly from a series featuring a pugnacious parson's brushes with the law.
See BM Satires 5520 for a caricature featuring the same characters.
