Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr. (1864-1947), here standing with the department store on Oxford Street behind him. He was an American born retail magnate who founded the British department store Selfridges. It was in 1906 when he first travelled to London that he was unimpressed with the quality of British stores and chose to invest in his own store in Oxford Street, which opened its doors to the public in 1909. He wrote a book "The Romance of Commerce", which was eventually published in 1918 and looked at commerce spanning the centuries and developments and importance of the key nations and merchant agreements and business practices.
