Qianlong Emperor (1711-1799) was the fifth Emperor of the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty. During the mid-eighteenth century, he felt serious pressure from the West to increase foreign trade. Due to a lack of any precedent, interaction with overseas foreign kingdoms and the belief that China was the "central kingdom" meant that there was a collapse of any cultural exchange between the British Empire and the Qing Empire. George Macartney, was sent by King George III as ambassador extraordinary and was a granted an audience with the Qianlong Emperor, and even attended the Emperor's 80th birthday. Macartney was unsuccessful as a a result of competing world views which were incompatible.
