A scene depicting the manner of attack and defense during maritime warfare on the Zürichzee, with the city of Zürich in the background. In the foreground, a colonnaded archway with two military states on either side, and naval paraphernalia in the centre: cannon, compass, armour, sword, cannonballs, spade and axe; amongst others. One of the New Year’s broadsides produced by the military society of Zurich, Switzerland. This organization of elite officers founded in 1713, issued these broadsides every year from 1743 to 1797. They were produced only for the members of the Society, to provide an unusual view of how a proud army prepared for battle. From: Militärische Gesellschaft der Pförtneren, Zürich. Neujahrsblätter. Zürich, 1743-1797.
