Baya de Gibraltar.
Copper engraving. 234 x 347mm. 9¼ x 13¾".
A depiction of the Battle of Gilbraltar on 25th April 1607. This was a crucial event in the history of the Netherlands' fight for independence against the Spanish. It was during the Eighty-year War, when the Dutch Fleet, led by Admiral Jacob van Heemskerck, surprised the Spanish fleet that was anchored off the coast of Gibraltar. Captain Adriaen Roest was second in command with two Dutch men of war under the command of Symon and Cornelis Madder. The Spanish fleet, led by Don Juan d'Alvares d'Avila, was entirely destroyed within hours.
