James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez (1757-1836), born in St Peter Port, Guernsey. He was an Admiral of the British Royal Navy and notable for his victory at the Battle of Algeciras. He has a successful career which included highlights including acting as Admiral Nelscon's second in command at the Battle of the Nile. By 1801 he was raised to the rank of Rear Admiral of the Blue and created a baronet. After great success at the Battle of Algeciras he was awarded the Order of the Bath and the Freedom of the City of London. Following the outbreak of the war with Russia in 1809, he was sent to command the Baltic fleet. Charles XIII bestowed on him the grand cross fo the military Order of the Sword, which in turn entailed further promotion to Rear-Admiral of the United Kingdom and later still Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom.
