Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741) was a French poet. Through is years of writings his verses were somewhat offensive at times, and in 1712 he was prosecuted for defamation of character, and, on his non-appearance at in court, was condemned to perpetual exile. In 1716 he was offered permission to return but he refused to accept it on the basis that the offer was not accompanied by complete rehabilitation. Prince Eugene of Savoy and other persons of distinction took him under their protection during his exile and in 1722 he met Voltaire in Brussels.
