George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759), composer, his hat tucked under his left arm, his hand thrust into his coat; in frame. Born in Saxony, Handel settled in London in 1712 where for nearly fifty years he poured out opera, oratorios, concertos and occasional music. His Messiah, first performed in Dublin in 1742, became a national institution within his lifetime. Some evidence of reworking to the plate. After the painting by Thomas Hudson (1701 - 1779).
