George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney (1737 - 1806), diplomatist and colonial governor. In 1769 he was returned for Antrim in the Irish parliament, in order to discharge the duties of Chief Secretary for Ireland, and became governor of Madras in 1776 After being created Earl Macartney in the Irish peerage, he was appointed the first envoy of Britain to China in 1793.
