This portrait used as the frontispiece to his 'History of Philosophy' (London, 1655.) Sir Thomas Stanley (1625-1678) was an English author and translator. His most famous work is his "History of Philosophy" which was long the principal authority on the progress of thought in ancient Greece. The book took the form of a series of critical biographies of the philosophers.
