[The Old Hospital, Rye.] 41.[The Old Hospital stands in Mermaid Street, near to the famour Mermaid Inn. It is a fine half-timbered building, with huge gables, and is in a good state of preservation. The building was the residence of Samuel Jeake, astrologer and author of the well-known diary. It takes its name from its use as a hospital for soldiers who were quartered in Rye during the war with France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The jettied first storey, the three pointed overhanging gables, the deep tiled rood and the small leaded windows all combine in making it an almost perfect specimen of an early timbered building.]
