James Trail, Bishop of Down, stout and elderly. His right hand holds a tasselled mortar-board. He wears a silk gown, lawn sleeves, a pair of bands and an enormous wig. Lettered 'Bishop of Eider Down' to top of plate. From 'Caricatures, Macaronies & Characters by sundry ladies gentlemen artists &c.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.2' upper left and '23' upper right.
