John Gurney.'The Weavers Advocate' and Woollen Manufacturers Glory.
Lithograph, sheet 120 x 150mm. 4¾ x 6". From a trimmed sheet.
John Gurney (1688 - 1741), Quaker; in an oval frame pointing to a roll of cloth, landscape behind; a figure of Britannia to right gesturing towards the portrait. The popularity gained by his defence of the wool trade caused his portrait to be engraved in 1720 in a broadside, of which this appears to be a copy. Underneath the portrait were verses to the ‘Norwich Quaker.’ The portrait is also reproduced in the 1848-58 ‘Record of the House of Gournay.’
