Thomas Gray (1716 - 1771), poet, classical scholar and letter writer. According to an early ink annotation to lower margin: 'Frontispiece to Mr. Potter's Inquiry into Dr. Johnson's Observations on the Odes of Mr Gray, 4to. 1783.' Wolfe is said to have remarked that he would rather have been the author of Gray's 'Elegy in a Country Churchyard' than take Quebec. After William Mason (1725 - 1797), poet and divine; friend and biographer of Gray.
