Joseph Huddart (1741-1816), Hydrographer and manufacturer. Joseph Huddart joined the East India Company with whom he made several voyages. He drew charts and collected hydrographic information, and made an important series of observations fixing positions on the west coast of India that improved the sailing directions for the route to the East. He had a reputation as an extremely accurate observer of geographical positions and was quick to adopt the latest survey techniques. After retiring, Huddart moved to London where he applied his skills to a wide range of activities. He became a prominent figure in the field of harbour engineering, to which he brought the experience of a practical seaman. Harbours and docks that he advised on included Hull, Boston, Swansea and Portsmouth.
