Sir Robert Sale (1782-1845), army officer. In the First Burmese War (1824-26) he led the 13th Regiment, and in one action he killed the enemy's leader in single combat. During the the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42) he was second-in-command of the army of occupation in Kabul, and Lady Sale's diary of the period was published as a 'Journal of the Disasters in Afghanistan' in 1843. In 1845 be became quartermaster-general to Sir Hugh Gough's army, but died the same year of wounds received at the battle of Mudki in the Punjab.
