Lithograph, sheet 250 x 165mm. 9¾ x 6½".
An aboriginal Australian holding aloft the severed head of an enemy. Plate to 'Souvenirs d'un aveugle (blind man)' by Jacques Etienne Victor Arago (1790 - 1855). A French writer, artist and explorer, Arago joined Louis de Freycinet on his 1817 voyage around the world aboard the ship Uranie, which inspired his witty 'Voyage autour du monde'. Although he lost his sight in 1837, he went on travelling and writing for the theatre.
