Engraving. 640 x 415mm, 25╝ x 16╝". Tears to margins, creased.
An allegorical monument to Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin (c. 1645-1712). From Eugene Mac-Swiny's 'Tombeaux des Princes, Grand Capitaines et Autres Hommes Illustres, Qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne'. Owen McSwiny, former manager of Drury Lane and the Haymarket Theatres, had travelled to Italy where he bought works of Italian painters, including Canaletto, to sell to English collectors. He also planned a series of historical pictures to decorate the Duke of Richmond's apartment at Goodwood, commemorating the deeds of famous Englishmen.
