Contrasting the differences in ladies's fashion of different centuries. William Heath (1794-1840) used the pseudonym Paul Pry (the name of a character John Poole's 1825 comedy, a very inquisitive person) between 1827-9, with a monogram of emblem of a small man holding a walking stick. However this figure began to be copied by other caricaturists (including Sharpshooter ) and so Heath reverted to his own name. A companion print to item ref: 36734.

Hand coloured lithograph. 'HB Subscribers Copy' blind stamp in lower left corner. Sheet size: 385 x 285mm (15¼ x 11¼"). Tipped into backing sheet.
A scene inside an auction room, with the auctioneer (George Robins) standing behind a pulpit, auctioning objects listed to the left in an advertisement. Two men standing in the background (Thomas Spring Rice, Lord Russell) are watching the scene. The scene makes reference to Lord Melbourne who was 'a guest at the dinner-table of Her Majesty, and when she was at Windsor, he lived almost wholly at the Castle. The desolate state of his own home was the subject of frequent remark in the daily papers, and furnished occasion for a good deal of pleasantry', from 'An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.', London 1841.

Stipple. Sheet size: 190 x 266mm (7½ x 10½"). Trimmed to image. Creased as normal.
A collection of thirty freaks and figures, both shunned and celebrated by contemporary society, including: Masaniello, the Neapolitan fisherman who supposedly led an uprising against the Spanish Habsburg rule in Naples in 1647; Billy Waters, one of many black beggars in early 19th-century London; Bampfylde Moore Carws (1693-1759), the English rogue, vagabond and imposter, who claimed to be King of the Beggars; Count Joseph Boruwlaski, the Polish dwarf who fell in love with Durham; Sir Thomas Parkyns (1662-1741), the noted wrestler, seen here clenching his fists, and the author of a book on Cornish Hugg wrestling; Samuel Horsey, who claimed that the surgeon Mr Abernethy cut off his legs without any explanation, who can be seen sliding along Charing Cross; and Lord Rokeby (1712-1800), the English eccentric nobleman who preferred a watery environment to a dry one. Key below identifying the figures, and images of natural phenomena (a water spout, volcanic eruption etc) around the edges.

Stipple, printed in sepia. 305 x 390mm (12 x 15¼"). Trimmed to printed border on three sides, mounted on album paper.
A portrait-painter painting a family group of a man and wife and their little boy who, despite wearing ordinary clothes, is holding a cupid's bow and a sheaf of arrows, probably a reference to the family portrait in Goldsmith's 'Vicar of Wakefield'. The adults hold doves; the boy yawns with boredom. A clipping from a printseller's catalogue, pasted underneath the print, suggests the bespectacled artist is a caricature of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Certainly the round glasses are similar to the ones worn in the Reynolds self-portrait in the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

[Printed and Sold by John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill.] [n.d. c.1740.]
Rare engraving. 255 x 150mm. (10 x 6"). Slight crease from centre, thread margins.
Scene in October, a dwarfish couple sit at a table drinking. The main scene is within an ornate border with little vignettes worked in, in this case including a man slumped on the floor drinking. According to O'Connell: 'A genre of humorous dwarf figures appeared in Germany about 1604 in the first of several versions of 'Il Callotto resuscitato''. This series bears some resemblence to Jacques Callot's grotesque 'Gobbi' series, but linked to Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels' by the title on 'January'. Thomas Bowles's 1754 catalogue included this set, 'Eleven Prints of Lilliputian Humours', 'Lilliputian Figures', 'Lilliputian Riding School twelve prints' & 'Lilliputian Dancing School twelve prints', showing the popularity of the genre.

A humerous representation of the 'tragic consequences that awaited those who put off marriage'. 'The Old Maid's Thermometer' starting at age 15, descibes an attractive and amiable young lady who was so fond of charming those around her that she refused to settle on one suitor and grew up to be an unmarried, 'illhumoured', lonely woman who 'turns all her sensiblilty towards cats and dogs', and becomes disgusted with the world by the age of 50. Likewise, 'The Old Bachelor's Thermometer' explains how a prideful and handsome young man, who is too pleased with his own virtues to marry the woman he truly loved, soon finds himself to be an unwell 50 year old who unhapilly marries his prudent young housekeeper. British copy of a Dutch satirical scene (one of a pair), in which the Puritan, René, declares his love to Sarotte. As the verses below underline, René's stiff demeanour is intended to contrast with the vivacious Sarotte ("trust me a sprightlier Bird, Mynheer"). In the accompanying plate René asks Sarotte's parents for their permission for him to marry her. After a painting from 1738 by Cornelis Troost (1697 - 1750).

The Return from Scotland, or Three Weeks after Marriage.
London: Printed for R. Sayer & J. Bennett, No 53 Fleet Street, as the Act directs, 5th Decem.r 1777.
Mezzotint with large margins, platemark 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾"). Repaired damage to margins.
A young couple sit awkwardly, the wife faced away from her husband, demonstrating that the honeymoon period has definitely ended. The tightening of marriage regulations in England in the 18th century prevented couples under the age of 21 from marrying without their parents consent. This gave rise to the phenomenon of young couples marrying over the border in Scotland, which inspired many satirical prints depicting both the joys and perils of impulsive decisions.

Hogarth Pinx.t. Dunkarton Sculp.t.
London, Published Feb 1st 1793, by T.B. Freeman & Co. Strand, & Sold by Dickenson, New Bond Street, & Walker, Cornhill.
Mezzotint with large margins. Platemark: 395 x 375mm (15½ x 14¾").
An illustration of a dramatic scene from Giovanni Boccaccio’s celebrated medieval novel, 'The Decameron'. The heroine, Sigismunda, holds a goblet sent to her by her father, Prince Tancred. Inside, is the heart of her dead husband, Giuscardo, one of Tancred’s servants. He has murdered him, enraged by their unsuitable secret marriage. This was Hogarth’s most deliberate attempt to prove that modern English painters could handle heroic themes as convincingly as the revered Italian old masters. But the picture received such harsh criticism that he almost completely abandoned painting for the last years of his life. For an open letter proof impression, see item ref: 36640.
