Ernest Gambart, an agent of the French print publisher Goupil, quickly launched himself on his own as a print publisher and seller and established the French Gallery in the mid-1850s at 120/121 Pall Mall as a full-time space devoted to the exhibition and sale of contemporary art. It was one of the first and most successful commercial galleries of contemporary art in London, and its emergence paralleled a larger transformation of the art market. Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) was a Scottish portrait painter. Frederick Walker (1840-1875) was an English social realist painter and illustrator, who was described by Sir John Everett Millais as 'the greatest artist of the century'. This book focuses on his early years and then from 1858 the chapters follow every year of his life. It was in 1858 that he was admitted as a student at the Royal Academy.
