Giuseppe Acerbi (1773-1846) the Italian naturalist, Arctic explorer and composer. In 1798 he travelled to Lapland, publishing his experiences in 'Travels through Sweden, Finland and Lapland to the North Cape in the years 1798 and 1799'. He collected some Finnish folk melodies, one of which he used in a clarinet concerto. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

Louis-Antoine, Comte de Bougainville (1729-1811) the French admiral and explorer. He was a contemporary of James Cook, and took part in the French and Indian War against Britain. He was the first Frenchman to circumnavigate the world, and gained fame for his expeditions to the Falkland Islands and voyages into the Pacific. His name is give to the largest eastern island of Papua New Guinea, and the strait which divides it from the Island of Choiseul. In the Falklands, Port Louis and 'Isla Bougainville' commemorate him. Portrait of Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Bt (1785 - 1846), Governor of Bombay, India. Bombay-born Carnac joined the East India Company in 1801 as a Cadet in the Madras Native Infantry. In 1802 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay and spent the next seventeen years working for the British administration in India. In 1822 he retired from the Indian service and went to England. In 1827 he was elected as Director of the East India Company, and from 1835 to 1838 served first as Deputy Chairman and then as Chairman. He became a Whig MP in 1837, but was offered the Governorship of Bombay soon after and resigned his seat the following year. He arrived in Bombay in 1839. However, less than two years into his post, his health faltered and in 1841 he resigned and left India for good.

A full-length portrait of George Cartwright (c.1739-1819), wearing furs and snowshoes, leading a blinkered greyhound. In 1768, after serving in the army, Cartwright travelled to Newfoundland and Labrador, attempting to trade with the Inuit for furs. In 1772 he returned to London with five Inuit to exhibit, four of whom died of smallpox. The fifth, a woman called Qavvik, returned home in 1773 taking the disease with her: less than a year later Cartwright noted that ''The Inuit of southern Labrador were almost entirely wiped out by the disease". In 1786 Cartwright returned to England for good and published his diary, 'A Journal of Transactions and Events during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador', to which this is an illustration.

American explorer (1710-80), whose expedition to find a North West Passage explored much of Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. His 'Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America in the Years 1766, 1767, and 1768', first published in 1778, is the first to mention a large mountain range to the west and to use the name 'Oregon'. This portrait is the frontispiece to the Third, posthumous, edition of the 'Travels'. The owner of the painting, Dr John Coakley Lettsom, was a Quaker physician and philanthropist who founded the Medical Society of London in 1773.

Half length portrait of Thomas Cavendish (1560-92), holding a globe and measuring instrument; in oval frame with parapet. Published as an illustration to the 'Heroologia Anglica'. Cavendish was the first person to set out with the intention of circumnavigating the globe, leaving in 1586 to emulate Drake's successes in plundering the Spanish colonies in the Pacific. Having captured more plunder than he could carry he returned to a hero's welcome in England in 1588 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.

Half-length portrait of Bain Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827), in naval uniform. Born in Annan in Scotland, he went to sea at thirteen and was impressed into the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1810 he was first in the breach at the storming of St Louis on Mauritius, and hauled down the French flag. In 1822 Clapperton joined Walter Oudney and Major Dixon Denham on an expedition to central Africa to trace the river Niger. Oudney died during the journey but Clapperton returned to England in 1825. Convinced that the way to the Niger was via West Africa, he went back that year as commander of a new expedition, but he died in 1827, suffering from malaria, depression, and dysentery. This portrait, after an oil now in the National Gallery of Scotland, was used as the frontispiece of Clapperton's 'Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the years 1822–1823 and 1824'.

During Columbus's stint as governor and viceroy, he had been accused of governing tyrannically. Columbus was physically and mentally exhausted; his body was wracked by arthritis and his eyes by ophthalmia. In October 1499, he sent two ships to Spain, asking the Court of Spain to appoint a royal commissioner to help him govern. The Court appointed Francisco de Bobadilla, a member of the Order of Calatrava; however, his authority stretched far beyond what Columbus had requested. Bobadilla was given total control as governor from 1500 until his death in 1502. Arriving in Santo Domingo while Columbus was away, Bobadilla was immediately peppered with complaints about all three Columbus brothers: Christopher, Bartolomé, and Diego. On 1 October 1500, Columbus and his two brothers, likewise in chains, were sent back to Spain.

James Cook (1728 - 1779), explorer. The son of a Yorkshire labourer, Cook learned his seamanship on small East-coast traders. He was chosen to command the Endeavour in 1768, and made three important voyages of discovery to the South and North Pacific, which included the first British landing in Australia. He was killed in Hawaii during a skirmish. One of at least fourteen engravings made from the famous 1776 portrait of Cook by Nathaniel Dance (1735 - 1811), which was commissioned by the explorer Sir Joseph Banks (London, National Maritime Museum).
