An illustration from Cornelius de Bruijn's (1652-1726) account of his travels to Italy and the Levant, 'Reizen van Cornelius de Bruyen door de vermaardste Peelen van Klein Asia', 1698. The scene shows the initiation of a new member of the Bentvueghals, a society of mainly Flemish and Dutch artists living in Rome between 1620 and 1720, these bacchic initiations could last over 24 hours after which the members would march to the Temple of Bacchus. Each member was given a nickname relating to classical mythology, de Bruijn was called 'Adonis'.
