A mezzotint based on one of the four paintings by Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) of 'The Bean King'. The subject is a 'bean feast', a traditional Dutch feast held on January 6, the day that the Three Kings or Magi came to worship the Christ Child. A pie or cake containing a bean was baked for the festivities and he who found the bean in his piece of pie or cake became Bean King.

Engraving with very large margins, rare. Platemark: 450 x 525mm (17¾ x 20½"). Laid on board. Tears and creases to sheet. Light foxing to sheet.
An interior scene within an elegant bedroom. An unusual representation of nine partially naked children masquerading in contemporary fashions and play-acting at adult behaviour. After french painter Charles Antoine Coypel (1694 - 1752), who became 'premier peintre du roi' and director of the Académie Royale in 1747. He received a number of commissions for paintings for the Palais de Versailles.

Engraving. Sheet size: 170 x 215mm (6¾ x 8½"). Trimmed inside plate.
A backdrop of a city street scene for a child's theatre game, by J.K. Green. Storefronts include the 'Peace Society', 'Friz, Portrait Painter. A Striking Likeness', and 'Oil and Colourman' shop. The Emigration Office in the centre is advertising 'The Gold Fields of Australia' in their front window. This print was sold by John Redington (1819-1876), publisher of toy theatre sheets and theatrical portraits. Redington became J.K. Green's agent in 1851. Whilst he described himself as a Printer, Bookbinder and Stationer, Tobacconist and Dealer in miscellaneous articles, his shop proclaimed on its facia to be a 'Theatrical Print Warehouse'.

An exterior scene in which three children, two boys and a girl, play with model ships one named 'Nelson' the other 'Nile' these names referring to Nelson's victory of the French at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
