Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim in Steindruck. [A cat in the larder.]
Hamilton pinx: [Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton] C: Auer del:
[German, Munich?, n.d., c.1823.]
Early and scarce sepia-tinted lithograph, heightened in white. Image 455 x 335mm, 18 x 13¼". Outline border. One repair and minor creasing in margins.
A large dead hare strung up by its legs dominates the centre of the composition; dead birds including tits, finches, thrush and partridge. After Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton (Flemish, c.1664 - 1750). The engraver is Kaspar Auer (German, 1795 - 1821). This plate formed part of a series of lithographed reproductions after paintings in the royal collection in Munich. "At this early stage lithography had not been developed far enough to reproduce colours, so the artists contented themselves with the addition of one or two tint-stones, from which highlights were scraped out to reveal the white of the paper. But to a public educated on the traditional type of 'gallery' publication, where all the paintings were reproduced in engraving, even this touch of colour would have been a surprise, and would have associated these prints rather with the traditional chiaroscuro woodcut." Fifth plate from a series of eight reproducing the cartoons executed by Raphael (1483 - 1520) for a series of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel. They were commissioned by Pope Leo X in 1515 - 1518. Bought by Charles I, the cartoons were placed in Hampton Court Palace in 1699 and are now at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Nicolas Dorigny (1658 - 1746) went to England and engraved the cartoons between 1711-1719, a work for which he was knighted in 1720.

Etching, platemark 255 x 375mm (10 x 14¾")
One from the set of six views that Stefano della Bella (1610-64) produced of the villa at Pratolino, near Florence. Built for Francesco I de'Medici in the sixteenth century, the villa was praised by Montaigne, amongst others. This view shows the spectacular path from the garden to the villa, along which the visitor walks beneath a succession of fountain jets. After being left unattended for much of the eighteenth century, the villa was demolished in 1820 and the garden was redesigned. It is now part of the Villa Demidoff, as it was named by a Russian industrialist who owned the site in the nineteenth century.
