Le Flirt. A mon Vieux Jean de Tinan son jeune ami Felicien Rops.
Le Flirt. A mon Vieux Jean de Tinan son jeune ami Felicien Rops. JdeT.
[Felcien Rops.]
[n.d. c.1894.]
Soft-ground etching. Plate 58 x 133mm. 2¼ x 5¼". On a slip written "Felicien Rops Famoso Gravador E Ilustrador Belga. N. em Namur - 1822. M. em Essones - 1898".
This image originates from an aquatint and etching which Rops created for Jean de Tinan's 1894 book entitled "Un Document sur L'Impuissance D'Aimer". The composition was the lower part of the frontice which Rops altering the plate with the addition of 'J de T', to the upper left, and the words, 'A mon Vieux Jean de Tinan, ', to the lower right. Félicien Rops (1833-1898) was a Belgian artist, and printmaker in etching and aquatint. Like the works of the authors whose poetry he illustrated, inluding Baudelaire, his works tended to mingle sex, death and Satanic images. He was one of the founding members of Société Libre des Beaux-Arts of Brussels and Les XX (formed 1883). He had connections with the Symbolist movement. His work was also highly blasphemous and pornographic in many of his compositions it can still cause offence in modern times. Jean de Tinan (1874-1898) was the author of "Un Document sur L'impuissance D'Aimer" (1894), "Penses-tu reussir" (1897), and "L'Exemple de Ninon de Leclos amoureuse" (1898). Jean de Tinan formed close friendships with a number of artists of the Belle Epoque, requesting art from Felicien Rops and Toulouse-Lautrec who made a lithograph for Jean de Tinan.

Simon Hans Figura was amongst the great pioneers in colour etching and aquatint. By the late 1920s, with studios in both Vienna and New York, Figura was well established as a regular exhibitor in these cities as well as in Paris, London and Berlin. Figura produced landscapes in almost every European city, combining the intricacies of colour etching and aquatint with amazing results. Highly successful during the golden era of this demanding medium, Figura's work is still sought after by fine art collectors today.

[Edward Julius Detmold. & Charles Maurice Detmold]
Unsigned etching issued in The Artist Engraver, April 1904
Etching. Plate 230 x 173mm. 9 x 6¾".
This was the first commercially published etching by the Detmold twins and attracted considerable attention. A collaboration that saw them elected as associates of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in the sinter of 1904. A bird of prey perched on a trunk with its wings in a defensive position squawking. The sun creates a halo behind the head.
Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) was twin brother to Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908). The pair were among the artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrators, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment. Edward expressed artistic versatility and published a number of books of fine fantasy drawings in the 1920s; they portrayed a vivid imagination and he utilised warm colouring, which suited the period. The Jungle Book (1908) was to be the last substantial commission that the brothers worked on - due to the death of Charles in that same year. The extraordinary success of their illustrations to accompany Kipling's classic tale, however, firmly established the reputation for Edward and the following year, a suite of illustrations prepared to Aesop's tales were published in The Fables of Aesop (1909).
