A marine scene showing the Schooner Yacht 'America' sailing off the coast of the Isle of Wight in 1851. 'America', built by a syndicate of members of the New York Sailing Club, won the Royal Yacht Squadron's race around the Isle of Wight, and was awared the '£100 Cup'. Now known as 'The America's Cup', it is the oldest international sporting trophy.

The first attempt to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable, beaten when the cable kept breaking. The British ships are named as 'Agamemnon' & 'Leopard', the American 'Niagara' & 'Susquehanna'.

A sea battle in the West Indies, fought during the Seven Years' War (1756-63), with a single British ship taking on and defeating three French vessels. Richard Tyrell (1716?-1766, later Rear-Admiral) spent most of his naval career in the West Indies. Resigning his commission in 1766 he died of fever on his return to England and was buried at sea. A memorial was erected in Westminster Abbey. Although the painter is named as Swaine, it is in fact Richard Paton. This is a smaller version of the engraving by Canot published in 1750

HMS Iron Duke, served in the China Sea, the last of four Audacious-class central battery ironclads, built for the Royal Navy in the Pembroke Dockyard, completed in 1871. She was the first ironclad to use the Suez Canal, en route to the Far East that year, although most of her coal had to be unloaded to reduce her draught. She was converted to a coal hulk in 1900. The October 6, 1779 engagement between HMS Quebec and the French frigate Surveillante off Ushant (Ouessant) in France, during the American Revolutionary War. Both ships were heavily damaged, and the battle concluded when the Quebec exploded. 'The Quebec frigate, Captain George Farmer, in company with the Rambler cutter, while cruising off Brest fell in with the Surveillante, and after a determined action caught fire and blew up. Captain Farmer and about one hundred men perished.'
