The British West Africa Squadron was established in 1808, its primary role being to suppress any activity by British slavers. In 1841 the English brig Acorn having perceived at great distance a vessel pillaging another, made chase, and instantly the Gabriel hoisted all her sail, and endeavoured to escape but eventually the Gabriel was dismasted, and captured. She was sent to St Helena, but her crew, consisting of fifty- eight men, Spaniards and others, were put on board an English vessel at Rio. The captain jumped overboard during the chase, with all his papers and the merchandise found on board the Gabriel was valued at roughly £35,000 of today's money.

Hans Busk the younger (1815 - 1882) was one of the principal originators of the volunteer movement in England. He took an equal interest in the navy. Originally it was his intention to adopt a naval career, and, being forced to abandon it, he devoted much of his leisure to yachting. He mastered the principles of naval construction, and made designs for several yachts which were very successful. He was the first to advocate life-ship stations, and fitted out a model life-ship at his own expense. Busk's youngest sister, Rachel Harriette Busk, was an authoress of repute.

De Groote Zaal in het Stoomschip, de Great-Eastern
De Groote Zaal in het Stoomschip, de Great-Eastern
C.C.A. Last Steend v. P. Blommers te 's Hage.
[c.1860]
Rare lithograph with tintstone, sheet 145 x 235mm (5¾ x 9¼"). Surface loss;
Dutch print showing the interior of the 'Great Eastern' steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built by Scott Russell & Co.Ltd, London. After many problems during construction, the ship was not completed until 1858, arousing enormous public interest at the time. During sea trials on 9th September 1859 the Great Eastern's heaters exploded, killing six firemen and devestating the grand saloon. The explosion would have sunk a lesser ship, but the Great Eastern survived. Brunel's new construction methods, dividing the ship up into compartments with watertight bulkheads, limited the extent of the damage. However, the bad news hastened the death of Brunel, who passed away on 15th September. In 1864, the Great Eastern was sold for a fraction of its cost to a cable laying company. The time that the ship spent laying cables for the new telegraph system was its most successful. It was used to lay the first telegraph cable to America. The Great Eastern was finally broken up in 1888.

An extremely fine naval image showing the confrontation of the British and the French off the coast of Java. The British, under the command of Capt. Robert Maunsell (1785-1845) discovered a convoy of local canoes and French gunboats at the mouth of the Indromayo river in Java. The British gunfire made little impact so they launched their boats and boarded and captured five of the French ships whilst blowing up a sixth.
