View in the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) near Agrigento, Sicily. The view shows the tomb of Theron, the temple of Concordia, and the Temple of Juno Lacinia. One of the outstanding examples of ancient Greek architecture in Italy, the Valley of the Temples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Engraved after a painting by Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807). Born in Prenzlau north of Berlin, Hackert came to Italy in 1768, settling in Rome where he joined a German group of artists also including Anton Raphael Mengs and the art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann. While this print says that the gouache from which it derives was painted in 1782, it may have derived from sketches made by Hackert on his study tour to Sicily in 1777. In 1786 he settled in Naples as court painter to Ferdinand IV. The print is dedicated to Count Andrey Kirilovich Razumovsky (1752-1836), Russian diplomat at patron of the arts (in 1806 he commissioned three string quartets from Beethoven).

Pub. March. 26, 1793, by E & S Harding Pall Mall.
Stipple. Sheet size: 185 x 130mm (7¼ x 5¼"). Trimmed inside platemark. Laid on scrap sheet.
A portrait, in profile facing the right, of Decius Brutus [a character in Shakespeare's] Julius Caesar, from a coin in Scottish anatomist and physician Dr. William Hunter's (1718 -1783) museum. Hunter was an avid antique coin collector and the 'Hunter Coin' cabinet in the Hunterian Museum remains one of the world's great collections. Decimus Brutus was a Roman politician and general of the 1st century BC and one of the leading instigators of Julius Caesar's assassination. Decimus Brutus is not to be confused with the more famous Brutus among the conspirators, Marcus Brutus. In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Decimus Brutus is mistakenly called 'Decius', as inscribed in the title.

From a series of Italian views after Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807). Born in Prenzlau north of Berlin, Hackert came to Italy in 1768, settling in Rome where he joined a German group of artists also including Anton Raphael Mengs and the art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann. In 1786 he settled in Naples as court painter to Ferdinand IV. The British painter Joseph Wright painted almost the exact same view a few years after Hackert (the painting is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool).
