Hand-coloured etching, with printseller's label glued on verso. Sheet: 450 x 300mm (17¾ x 12"). Title removed as usual and glued to verso as issued. Trimmed into publication line.
A view of Amsterdam from the harbour. On the reverse is the printseller's label of John Hogben Master of the Mathematical Free School, at Rye in Sussex, now Rye College. A wonderful & rare country printseller's descriptive label. The label lists the variety of books, prints and stationary he stocks including account books, penknives, pens, sealing wax, inks, mathematical instruments, globes, maps, spectacles and fishing tackle 'Sold as Cheap as in London'.
Label is different from 41620.

A portrait of French mathematician, astronomer and early political leader of the French Revolution Jean Silvain Bailly (1736-1793). Bailly was the first to take the Tennis Court Oath on June 20th 1789 and became mayor of Paris following the storming of the Bastille. Bailly was executed during the Reign of Terror.

A military scene showing the reconquering of Corsica by the French on 19th October 1796. Following the execution of Louis XVI Pasquale Paoli, leader of Corsica, requested protection from Britain. Seeing the chance to have a naval base in the Mediterranean, a British naval fleet, under the command of Admiral Samuel Hood, set sail in 1794. However, with Spain joining the French in 1795, Britain started to reduce the number of soldiers on the island and by October all troops had been removed leaving the island unguarded and open to French attack. From Carle Vernet's 'Tableaux Historiques des Campagnes D'Italie...' 1806.

A decorative half-title from one of Coronelli's smaller format works, featuring the Venetian Lion, wings spread and sword in paw. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was official cartographer of the Republic of Venice, and many of his publications glorified their achievements.
