G.B. Cipriani Inv.t F. Bartolozzi Sculp.t
J. Boydell excudit. Published May 2.d 1768.
Copper engraving, 230 x 170mm. 9 x 6½". Large margins.
Mother and child, probably representing the Virgin Mary and Christ child, after Giovanni Battista Cipriani (Florence 1727- London 1785). A founder member of the Royal Academy and one of the most prolific draughtsmen of his generation,Cipriani produced decorative schemes, drawings for medallions, and concert tickets in a neo-classical style. His fame was partly due to his partnership with his fellow Italian, engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. Bartolozzi engraved many of Cipriani's works and also designed Cipriani's tomb in the Old Chelsea Burial Ground. This engraving formed part of "The Most Capital Paintings in England", a series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three of which (1769 to 1773) were originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.
