Two landscapes, the serene and peaceful 'Calm' (featuring a gentleman reading a book in centre foreground) contrasting with the windswept scene with two pedestrians struggling at left, and a fallen tree at right. Both compositions show buildings across water in distance. First plate numbered '18' upper left. Jean Baptiste Chatelain (French/British, 1710 - 1758) was a topographical draughtsman and printmaker working in London.

In the centre in the distance is a town, with a river running around it; to left a wooded hill with a figure seen from behind leaning forward drinking from a waterfall. Further down the hill, two men on a bridge; to right, a distraught woman lying on the ground, her wrist being held by a man standing to left. These two are said by Fagan to be the Old Testament figures Judah and Tamar.
After Annibale Carracci (1560 - 1609).

Landscape with cattle and herdsmen resting amongst fallen tree branches. A cottage can be seen behind and a town with church spire over fields beyond. After Thomas Gainsborough by J G Ashley (1821 - 1837; fl.), landscape and flower painter in London. He exhibited work at the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts 1822-37, and was also a lithographer.
The Gainsborough picture was in the collection of Monsieur D'Esenfans in 1796. Rare.

The print made by George Simon, Viscount Nuneham, later second earl Harcourt (1736 - 1809), a gifted amateur artist who was taught by Paul Sandby, and was a member of the Society of Dilettanti. William Whitehead (1715 - 1785) was poet-laureate.

In addition to familiar Roman landmarks such as the River Tiber, the Castel Sant'Angelo and Bridge, and St. Peter's Basilica, the busy composition features St. Peter writing his epistles and performing a baptism, and his upside-down crucifixion (at Rome). By the engraver brothers Joseph Sebastian and Johann Baptist Klauber who set up a family business in Augsburg. This is perhaps for their 'Historiæ Biblicæ veteris et novi Testamenti ... in centum frugiferis foliis exhibitæ a J. et J. K. Biblische Geschichten...' - a series of ornamental engravings with accompanying texts from the Bible in Latin.

From a series by Francesco del Pedro (1749 - 1806) after Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789), the famous marine painter. Vernet studied and worked in Rome (1734-53) until recalled to Paris where he was commissioned to paint a set representing French harbours (the 'Ports de France'). He was the father of Carle Vernet, and grandfather of Horace.
Published in Venice by Nicolo Cavalli (1730 - 1822).

Rare set of four etchings after Dutch masters by William Austin, the first three plates with all-over sepia/light brown watercolour wash applied, 'Night' in blue. Each c.280 x 370mm, 11 x 14½". Laid on album pages, good margins.
Four Dutch landscapes, all featuring water, ships, buildings and figures, illustrating different stages of a day; each plate with two lines of verse to either side of title.
Painters include Jacob Isaaksz van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen, and Aert van der Neer. William Austin (1721 - 1820), engraver and draftsman, was born in London in 1721. He was a pupil of George Bickham; but after having engraved a few plates, he relinquished the practice of the art, and devoted the remainder of his life to teaching drawing, first in London and afterwards in Brighton. He for some time kept a print-shop, and published some political caricatures, which were mostly directed against the French, and in support of the administration of Charles James Fox.

Very rare mezzotint, after John Varnell's painting 'The Beauty of Israel is slain on the High Places - How are the mighty fallen', painted twelve years before, on which Linnell had worked, painting the figures.
Linnell, a close friend of William Blake, started etching in 1813, but turned to mezzotint, with this plate being one of the first in that medium.

Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines (1845-1939), French painter & printmaker. From 1884 to 1897 he lived in Britain, and in 18789 and 18878 his views of London, Oxford and Edinburgh appeared in portfolio.
Based on Constable's oil exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1820, titled 'Landcape', showing young anglers around Stratford Mill on the Stour, about two miles west of East Bergholt, looking south toward Gun Hill. The old papermill was replaced about 1850 by a macaroni factory!
