The story of Annette et Lubin was popularized by French dramatists Charles Simon Favart (1710 - 1792) and Jean-François Marmontel (1723 – 1799). In reality they were Gilles de Walt and Maria Schmitz who lived around 1750 in the woods near Niveze, a small village now part of Spa municipality. As full cousins the church didn't give them permission to marry, but Maria became pregnant. Some wealthy visitors to Spa cared for them and got a pardon from the pope, so the two could marry. The Côte d'Annette e Lubin in Belgium is named after them.
