[Bulstrode Whitelock, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of England, Constable of Windsor Castle, High Steward of Oxford, aged 49, 1653.] From a Medal in Silver by T. Simon in the Cabinet of Charles Rinald Berch of Stockholm.
G.B. Cipriani Del. F. Bartolozzi Sculp.
Engraving, sheet 280 x 210mm. 11 x 8¼". Trimmed within plate.
The obverse and reverse of a silver medal, a Latin inscription and bust portrait of Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605 - 1676), diplomat and lawyer. A Parliamentarian and writer on history and politics, Whitelocke was Keeper of the Great Seal and Ambassador to Sweden, 1653.
The medal, made by Thomas Simon (1618 - 1665), is in the British Museum. Hawkins states (1885): 'Cast from a model by Abraham Simon, and chased by his brother Thomas; beautifully executed. This specimen was received from Mr. Berch of Stockholm by Mr. Hollis, from whom it passed through the hands of Mr. Dimsdale and Mr. Trattle to the British Museum. In this collection there is another specimen (registration no. M.7360), but without a reverse; but at the back is scratched the name Lenthall, which is an error'.
