[Thomas Dudley after Francis Barlow, 1678/9]
Etching, platemark approx. 240 x 165mm (9½ x 6½").
One of thirty-two illustrations to the second (1687) edition of Francis Barlow's Aesop, showing scenes from the life of the Greek storyteller. All of the plates were designed by Barlow but only five were etched by him. The rest, including this one, were etched by Thomas Dudley (1678-9, fl.). Little is known of Dudley- he signed himself as a student of Wenceslaus Hollar in one print and while he etched some portraits, his prints after Barlow are his most important work. In 1679 he went to Lisbon, where he is known to have made further prints, and he is not supposed to have returned to England thereafter.

When the engraver Girard Audran (1640-1703) returned to Paris after a period of study in Rome at the studio of Carlo Maratti, he was engaged to engrave these four enormous pictures, which took him six years and for which he was paid over 10,000 francs. The series is the masterpiece of an important engraver, and earned him admission to the Académie Royale.

Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. Jan de Witt opposed the appointment of William of Orange as stadtholder, and after the French invasion of the United Provinces in 1672 the people called for William and demonstrated against Jan. That same year Cornelis de Witt was suspected of treason and condemned to exile for life. As a result Jan resigned his position as councillor pensionary, but when he visited Cornelis in prison in the Hague, a mob gathered, dragged both brothers outside, and murdered them (as shown here). Offered with description of the events and double portrait of the brothers (probably not by de Hooghe).

Etching with letterpress, scarce; 320 x 210mm (12½ x 8¼"). Tipped into album sheet.
The murder of the Dutch scholar and diplomat Isaac Dorislaus (1595-1649), scholar and diplomat. Dorislaus was appointed to the counsel for the prosecution of Charles I in January 1649 and he helped draw up the charge of high treason against the king, arguing for the lawful deposition of tyrants who deprive subjects of their freedom and privileges. After the trial Dorislaus sought the position of keeper of the library of St James, but first agreed to undertake one last diplomatic mission to the Hague. The decision was fatal: on 2 May 1649 a group of royalists entered the inn in Scheveningen where Dorislaus was staying, and stabbed him to death.
For portrait of Dorislaus see ref. 24671.

Le triomphe de la Liberte en l'elargissement de la Bastille, dedie la Nation Fracoise, par leurs respectueux admirateurs, James Gillray & Robert Wilkinson.
Painted by Jams Northcote, R.A. Engraved by James Gillray.

Stipple engraving. Sheet 530 x 635mm. Trimmed to plate. A few tears in paper edge, 2 (repaired) into title.
This image represents the high point of pro-revolutionary feeling in Britain towards France, after the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and before 'The Terror' and repressions of the 1790s. Cells and cages are broken open and emaciated prisoners freed by soldiers. Skeletons, fetters, racks and other instruments of torture represent the horrors of the institution that is being overthrown. A good impression of this print engraved by James Gillray, one of his infrequent departures from caricature, in a bold and striking manner. 'History, No.3.' inscribed top left.

Engraving. 630 x 830mm. Tatty extremities, some foxing.
France’s violent transition from the ancien regime that had nurtured tennis (le jeu de paume) to the anti-aristocratic revolution began with the takeover of a tennis court. In June 1789, following a month-long deadlock in the States-General over constitutional reform at the royal palace of Versailles, the frustrated Third Estate (the commons), which had been locked out from the formal meeting place by King Louis XVI, declared itself a National Assembly, took over a royal tennis court, and on June 20th took an oath (serment) not to disperse till their demands were met. Three weeks later, on July 14th, a Paris mob attacked the Bastille prison. A nineteenth century impression of the plate first published by Nicolas Ponce in 1792.

The canonesses of the Abbey of Saint Adelgonde at Maubeuge, northern France, giving up some of the wealth of their foundation to the French state. The last Abbess Adrienne-Florence de Lannoy (1775 - 1791) in the foreground approaches a bust of King Louis XVI surrounded by allegorical figures and putti representing the values of a new, revolutionary, French state. In the aftermath of the Revolution, it was decided by the National Assembly that royal monastic and religious foundations should pay an annual tribute to the state. The nunnery at Maubeuge was dissolved soon afterwards in 1791.

Saint Gregory I the Great or Pope Saint Gregory I (c. 540 – 604) was pope from September 3, 590 until his death. This illustrates the circumstances of his famous quote 'Non Angli, sed Angeli' ('They are not Angles, but Angels') when he first encountered blue-eyed, blond-haired English boys at a slave market. The incident is said by Bede to have led to his dispatching of St. Augustine of Canterbury to England to convert the English. A fantastic example of colour printing.
