Vicenzo Coronelli presenting a volume of his 'Biblioteca Universale Sacro-Profana' to Pope Clement XI, a bookcase full of Cornelli's atlases behind the papal dais. The print is surrounded by a border of mapmaking instruments and globes. The 'Biblioteca universale' was an encyclopedia, one of the first universal encyclopedias in a European vernacular language with entries arranged alphabetically. It was planned to contain 45 volumes but only 7 volumes appeared, published 1701-7, only reaching 'C'. The set is exceedingly rare. In Russia he supervised the creation of the 'Atlas Russicus', published 1745, and in Germany he published the 'Atlas Geographicus' in 1753. Euler has been commemorated on postage stamps issued by Russia and Germany, as well as on a Swiss banknote.

However he made the most money by improving the design and manufacture of rope.

Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) the French geographer, printer and cartographer in Paris, in the service of King Louis XIV. Around 1669 he went into partnership with Nicolas Sanson's sons, Guillaume and Adrien, to produce an enlarged edition of Sanson's maps. Jaillot's most important work was, 'Le Neptune Francois', a wonderful sea-atlas produced in 1693, in co-operation with Cassini. However, falling out with Sanson's heirs, he helped Pierre Mortier publish a pirate edition in Amsterdam. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

His world map of 1569, 'Mercator's Projection', the flattened map of the spherical Earth, earned him cartographic fame. He was the first to the word 'Atlas' for a collection of maps. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

A portrait of English academic Joseph Moxon (1627 - 1691). Half length, to the right, looking at viewer, wearing long wig, gown and bands, in oval frame on pedestal. This portrait was used as a frontispiece to his 'A Tutor to Astronomy and Geography' (1699). Joseph Moxon, hydrographer to Charles II, was an English printer of mathematical books and maps, a maker of globes and mathematical instruments, and a mathematical lexicographer. He produced the first English language dictionary devoted to mathematics. In November 1678, he became the first tradesman to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
