Cain (1893-1962) produced 74 etchings and engravings of scenes in Iraq, Persia, India and Burma (Myanmar) between the 1920s and 1930s, likely inspired by his service in the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia. With such a distinctive thematic subject Cain gained a strong reputation as an Orientalist printmaker.

Joseph Auguste Jules Laurens (1825 - 1901) travelled with the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell on a scientific journey to Turkey and Persia, making over a thousand drawings of the sites, costumes and people he encountered. After Hommaire died of cholera in 1848 Laurens sent his notes back to his widow in Paris who completed a full account of their travels, 'Voyage en Turquie et en Perse, exe´cute´ par ordre du Gouvernement Francais pendant les anne´es 1846, 1847 et 1848', containing many lithographs by Laurens.

Alfonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515), a Portuguese adventurer, built a fortress in Hormuz in 1509, dominating the entrance of the Persian Gulf. An insurrection by his lieutenants weakened him, but when the Persians demanded tribute from the Portuguese, Albuquerque showed him some guns and cannon balls and said 'Here is the tribute the king of Portugal will pay'. A plate from the Abbé Raynal's 'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens des Européens dans les deux Indes', a study of colonialism heavily influenced by the Englightenment, banned in his native France in 1779.

De Bruyn attached great significance to his visit to Persepolis, describing it in detail and including nuermous engravings in his publication.

He travels and wrote extensively about Persia and its provinces.

The general map from Edward Granville Browne's 'A Year Among the Persians', showing his route from Kurdinstan to Terhran, Shiraz and Kerman, and across the sea to Baku. Browne (1862-1926) was a British Iranologist who spent a year there in 1887-8. This account was very favourable towards the Persians, who reciprocated their feelings: a Tehran street named after him and a statue survived the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Plate from 'Recueil de cent estampes représentant différentes nations du Levant', a set of one hundred plates depicting the costume of the Levant, based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis Charles de Ferriol, ambassador from the court of Versailles to the Sublime Porte from 1699 to 1710. The work had a profound effect on how the European conception of Turkey. After Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737), the Flemish-French painter, who Ferriol brought with him to Istanbul at the age of eighteen. Ferriol commissioned at least a hundred paintings from Vanmour, which served as the source for the engravings in the 'Recueil' and are now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
