Political satire: Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778 - 1868), in his Lord Chancellor's wig and robe, facing Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769 - 1852). Wellington is wearing an undergraduate's mortarboard and gown; he was Chancellor of the University of Oxford 1834–1852. I.(or J.)B. Brookes (1830 - 1837; fl.) published his own lithographic satires. His monogram appears similar to ‘HB’ (John Doyle), perhaps deliberately.

A standing man in profile with wig and hands folded under his gown. The BM has two impressions, one identified in an old hand as Lord L------n. [Lansdowne?] - William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737 - 1805), Prime Minister and patron of the arts; in the second impression he is identified as Sir Nash Grose (1740 - 1814), Judge. He appears to be wearing a legal wig and gown which would make the identification with Grose more probable. The wig resembles that worn by Serjeants at law. From '24 Caricatures by several ladies, gentlemen, artists, etc.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.1' upper left and '17' upper right.

In his left hand is a rolled document, and he wears a voluminous gown which trails on the ground. From 'Characters, Macaronies & Caricatures, by MDarly', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.6' upper left and '21' upper right.

Scarlett was appointed attorney-general of the duke of Wellington's administration in June 1829, and here he refers to the Duke's libel action (in the form of the dirty linen, inscribed 'criminal information', that he is obliged to wash).
