Five views in Japan, from an album of 'sketches made on a trip round the world'. By Edward Morrison de Courcy Short, b.1857, who attended Charterhouse School, Surrey (1870-6). He passed the Ceylon Civil Service exam in 1878, and in 1905 became Chairman of the Municipal Council and Mayor of Colombo, retiring in 1910.

Two illustrations within a separately-printed frame-like border: a merchant's boat and a fishing boat, both of Goa; and the Japanese emperor's barge, a Chinese Junk and two Chinese river boats. This was published in Vincenzo Coronelli's 'Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto'. Coronelli (1650-1718), was Official Cartographer to both Louis XIV of France and the Doge of Venice, as well as being Father General of the Franciscan order.

Passengers and crew aboard a small boat. Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) led a US government expedition designed to open up trade with Japan, which had been in self-imposed isolation for almost 200 years. The United States wanted to increase their trade routes in the western Pacific. They also wanted a coaling station for the new steam-powered ships of the US Navy. From the "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, Performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854, Under the Command of Commodore M.C. Perry, United States Navy, by order of the Government of the United States, at his request, and under his supervision", by Francis L. Hawkes.

Hand-coloured lithograph. 254 x 356mm. 10 x 14". Trimmed. Some scuffing around the edges.
Crinoline did not appear in the England until c.1830, but by 1850 it had come to mean a stiffened petticoat or a rigid skirt-shaped structure of steel designed to support the skirts of a woman's dress into the required shape. It was around this time, the mid 19th century, that Japan began to emulate Western fashion, and to slowly present the many styles and fashions to Japanese society.

A view of the town of Nagasaki, Japan, from the river, including various traditional vessels on the water in the foreground, and hills in the distance. Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern (1770-1846) arrived in Japan in 1804, hoping to re-establish diplomatic ties between Rusia and Japan, but the Rusians were denied entry and all their requests were refused. Nagasaki was then the only port open to westerners, mainly Dutch traders. Kruzenshtern was a German who commanded the first Rusian circumnavigation of the world. This is the frontispiece from volume two of his 'Voyage around the world, in the years 1803, 1804, 1805 & 1806'.

A garden on Okinawa, with British sailors carrying casks to a storeroom, during a six-week stay there. From 'Narrative of a voyage in His Majesty's late ship Alceste', an account of Lord Amherst's diplomatic mission to China in 1817. On the return journey the Alceste hit a reef in the Java Sea and was wrecked, after which the crew had to cope with Malay Dyak pirates who burned the ship and surrounded their camp.

Servants of a Mikado, a Japanese Imperial head of state. Von Siebold was born in Würtzburg, in Germany, and worked for the Dutch government as a doctor in Java. In Japan, where Von Siebold arrived in 1823 at the age of 27, he demonstrated his skills in medicine. His reputation allowed him to go beyond Deshima and to buy a house outside Nagasaki. Published in "Nippon. Archiv zur Beschreibung von Japan und dessen Neben- und Schutzländern: jezo mit den südlichen Kurilen, Krafto, Koorai und den Liukiu-Inseln, nach japanischen und europäischen Schriften und eigenen Beobachtungen bearbeitet," a publication depicting for the first time on a large scale, the ethnography and geography of Japan.
